About the Author: Dan Cogan-Drew played college Ultimate at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT (1990-1993). After graduation, he began teaching Spanish at Johnson County High School in Wrightsville, Georgia, through Teach For America. While there, he founded his first Ultimate team, the JHS “Headhunters.” In his second year he began teaching English, playing with Atlanta’s “Chain Lightning” at Worlds (1995), and coaching the U Georgia men’s team. During and after graduate school at Brown (Providence, RI), Dan played with club team “Snapple,” competing again at Worlds in Vancouver in 1997. During this time, he taught English in the Broadened Opportunities for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program at the US Navy base in Newport, Rhode Island, and later at the Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury, Connecticut (where he founded his second high school team, the “Disciples”). During this time he played in three world championships with Death or Glory (1998-2000), winning two, and spent summers in Providence, Rhode Island, teaching English and study skills seminars through the Upward Bound summer program at Rhode Island College. In 2001, he came to Tufts University (Medford, MA) as the founding director of the Curriculum Resource Center in the Department of Education. Around this same time, he began coaching the MIT men’s team (2001-2004), and women’s club team “Brute Squad” (2004; 2006). In his work at Tufts, Dan writes and directs grants, develops curricula in teacher education and professional development, designs educational software, and dreams up new ways to use video to help teachers and students learn from their experiences in (and out of) the classroom. He is a co-designer of the VideoPaper Builder software, which he uses frequently as a tool for teaching and also for analyzing Ultimate videos. In fall 2006, Dan worked with professional trainer and former teammate Bryan Doo to produce"Ultimate Fitness," a UPA-sponsored DVD fitness program specifically for Ultimate.
